The new office of HVK Stevens is located in a characteristic building in Amsterdam, designed in the late 1990s by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

The building has a lot of natural light, white steel elements and large glass surfaces, with a striking shape that is reminiscent of a boat. This is no coincidence: HVK Stevens compares itself to a speedboat—streamlined, fast, agile and powerful. The passion for water turned out to be a shared characteristic of many partners within HVK Stevens.

This nautical theme became the common thread in the design concept. The shape of the boat symbolizes the journey, the course determines the direction and the ripples in the water reflect the impact of their work.

Designing a legal office requires balancing professionalism, confidentiality, and comfort. Legal firms often take a traditional approach to office design, prioritizing focused work, which makes private rooms a logical choice. However, knowledge sharing and collaboration are equally essential for a successful legal practice. In this office, we have created both types of spaces, each with a strong identity. To ensure a comfortable and inspiring environment, we incorporated warm materials such as wood and cork.

This is an important counterpart to the hard materials that characterise the building. Sustainable choices have been made, for example, by opting for carpet tiles made from old fishing nets. But sustainable choices have also been considered in the furniture: various vintage furniture gives objects a second life and the office character.
