Council Crest Residence

The Council Crest residence is a thoughtfully designed, light-filled home nestled on an expansive lot on Council Crest’s east side. It balances refined design details, natural materials, and high-performance building techniques. The exterior features a striking interplay of brick, stained cedar siding, and a bold black steel volume hovering above the garage, which houses a lively flexible family space on the second floor.

Inside, the home is a study in serenity and cohesion, with hand-troweled plaster walls, heated terrazzo floors, oiled white oak cabinetry, and expansive triple-glazed windows. These elements create a warm and tactile environment, blending elegance with everyday comfort. The restrained architectural palette fosters a harmonious dialogue between spaces, while accent materials add depth and individuality.

Custom cabinetry throughout the residence provides ample storage, offering both functional and intimate concealed spaces. Linear wood millwork contrasts gracefully with the curved plaster forms of the staircase, planter, and fireplace, achieving a sense of balance throughout the home. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors seamlessly connect the interior to the outdoors, while oversized windows and skylights bathe the spaces in natural light, enhancing the home’s airy, open atmosphere.

Technically, the house is uncompromising. The home’s high-performance design integrates an airtight envelope with continuous exterior insulation, Passive House-grade triple-glazed windows, and a geothermal heat pump powering hydronic radiant floors for heating and cooling. Additional features include dehumidification systems, an HRV for optimal indoor air quality, rooftop solar panels, battery walls for backup power, and two 5,000-gallon underground rainwater tanks for domestic use and irrigation. This holistic system ensures extreme energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and enduring comfort.

The landscape design contains the architectural volumes with sweeping steel retaining walls that sculpt the site into three functional tiers. Mature plantings will create a dynamic relationship between the house and garden, balancing openness with privacy. In the back garden, an existing stone wall anchors two intimate seating areas, one offering a serene view of the green roof. The primary suite is immersed in a perennial garden on one side, while the spa and a future sauna are surrounded by a contemplative garden space. Together, the architecture and landscape foster a sense of connection, balance, and tranquility.
