Historical Atmosphere by Bergen’s Waterfront

The shoreline in Sandviken is undergoing a transformation, evolving from an industrial area into a vibrant residential neighborhood. Rooted in Bergen's rich maritime history, the project draws inspiration from the city's traditional boathouses and waterfront culture. Once a key trading hub, Sandviken's heritage is reflected in the architectural concept, seamlessly blending the past with modern living.

A Legacy of Trade and the Sea

Bergen’s historic boathouses have long defined its coastal identity. Dating back to the 1600s, these buildings served as storage spaces for goods arriving by sea, playing a vital role in the city's trading network. Today, they stand as cultural landmarks, influencing the design of this new development. By preserving the area's historical character while introducing contemporary residences, the project honors Sandviken’s legacy and its deep connection to the sea.

A total of 77 apartments, ranging from 38 to 164 square meters, will be spread across five carefully designed buildings. With panoramic views of Byfjorden and a close relationship with the water, the homes combine modern aesthetics with respect for the surrounding historical environment. The architectural expression is inspired by traditional boathouses, where colorful facades and varied building orientations create a lively and dynamic atmosphere.

A Community by the Water

Emphasizing both public and private spaces, the project fosters a sense of community while maintaining areas for retreat and relaxation. The quay promenade will be open to the public, inviting people to enjoy the waterfront through recreation, swimming, and social gatherings. A distinctive feature is the "shrimp staircase," a terraced descent to the water that encourages both active and leisurely interaction with the sea.
